Messi Targets First MLS Title as Miami Take on Müller’s Vancouver

ZoyolsBlog

Lionel Messi is set to lead Inter Miami in their quest for a maiden MLS title on Saturday as they face Thomas Müller’s surging Vancouver Whitecaps in a highly anticipated season finale.

Since arriving in Florida two years ago, Messi has transformed Miami’s fortunes, guiding the team from expansion struggles to a dominant playoff run, netting 17 goals in five matches. The 38-year-old Argentine is now on the verge of delivering the club its first domestic championship.

Vancouver, however, offers a formidable challenge. German star Müller, who joined the Whitecaps in August, has injected firepower into their attack, making the final an electrifying showdown between two World Cup winners. Alongside Messi and Müller, Inter’s Sergio Busquets and Argentina’s Rodrigo De Paul will also feature, adding more star quality to a final hailed as a marketing spectacle.

Müller downplayed the narrative of a personal duel with Messi, insisting the focus remains on the teams. “It’s not about Messi against Thomas Müller. It’s Miami against the Whitecaps,” he said after Vancouver’s 3-1 win over San Diego in the Western Conference final.

Miami’s journey to the final has been a remarkable turnaround. In April, Javier Mascherano’s squad struggled with only two wins in eight games, including a 5-1 aggregate defeat to Vancouver in the CONCACAF Champions Cup. Critics described the team as slow and unbalanced, yet eight months on, Miami has been revitalized. The addition of Rodrigo De Paul has brought strength and mobility, while young Mateo Silvetti has injected much-needed pace in attack.

Whitecaps coach Jesper Sorensen refused to be distracted by past results against Miami. “It almost seems like it was last season,” he said. “It’s a new game. Both teams have their ways, and we’ll see who comes out on top on Saturday.”

Messi, speaking for the first time this season, acknowledged the home advantage at Chase Stadium could play a key role. “We’re in a very good moment, the team is solid and excited. Playing at home is a plus,” he said.

Müller, 36, brings his own edge to the encounter. One of the few players with a winning record against Messi, he has bested the Argentine in seven of ten meetings, including the 2014 World Cup final and Bayern Munich’s 8-2 Champions League quarter-final win over Barcelona. Yet Müller insisted past results will not influence Saturday’s clash. “It doesn’t really matter for Saturday; it’s a new game,” he said.

The stage is set for a thrilling MLS Cup final, pitting two World Cup champions and global icons against each other in a match that could define Miami’s young history and cement Messi’s legacy in American soccer.
