The family of late singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has renewed calls for a transparent, independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death. In a statement issued Tuesday, signed by family head Omolayo Aloba and Mohbad’s father, Joseph Aloba, the family also directed his partner, Wunmi Adebanjo, to stop using the Aloba surname pending the results of a court-ordered DNA test.
The statement emphasized the family’s commitment to uncovering the truth and holding accountable anyone responsible for Mohbad’s death. They announced the appointment of new legal representatives to handle all matters related to the estate and the ongoing DNA case. Oladayo Ogungbe, Esq., will oversee estate and DNA-related issues, while Dr. Wahab Shittu, SAN, continues to liaise with investigative authorities regarding the singer’s death.
Three administrators—Ajewole Aloba, Rasaq Famuyiwa, and Alonge Aloba—have been named to manage Mohbad’s assets, royalties, and intellectual property. The family left a potential slot for Wunmi to join the administrators if a DNA test confirms she is the mother of Mohbad’s child, Liam. Until the test is complete, she is barred from using the Aloba surname publicly or privately. The family also clarified that no statutory or customary marriage occurred, as Yoruba traditional rites, including payment of the bride price, were never completed.
The family appealed to the public to respect the legal process, stating that the DNA verification is meant to ensure clarity and fairness in estate distribution, not to vilify anyone. They also announced that a new burial and memorial plan will be shared once legal matters are concluded.
Responding to the family’s directive, Wunmi’s lawyer, Kabir Akingbolu, dismissed the surname restriction as illegal, noting her constitutional right to retain the name. He criticized the family for repeatedly changing legal representatives and delaying the court-ordered DNA test, insisting that his client is ready for verification at any time.
This latest development adds to the ongoing dispute over Mohbad’s estate and the paternity of his son, Liam. The singer passed away on September 12, 2023, at age 27, with circumstances surrounding his death sparking widespread controversy. Following his departure from Marlian Music in February 2022, a 13-man special investigation team was set up by the Lagos State Police to probe the case, with his family seeking clarity on both the death and the estate disputes.
