Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen showed both humility and determination on Thursday as Nigeria overcame Gabon 4-1 in extra time, securing a spot in Sunday’s playoff final against DR Congo.
The team looked dominant at intervals, but late in regulation, Osimhen missed a clear goal-scoring chance that could have sealed the match without extra time. Despite the slip, the Galatasaray forward remained focused and determined to make amends.
“I am a striker. Sometimes I score the goals no one expects, and sometimes I miss the ones everyone thinks I will score,” Osimhen said after the match. “I told my teammates I was sorry for the miss and promised I would make up for it in extra time, and I am happy I did.”
True to his word, Osimhen scored twice in extra time, helping Nigeria secure the victory. The other goals came from Sevilla teammates Akor Adams and Chidera Ejuke, completing a commanding performance by the Super Eagles.
With this win, Nigeria now turns its focus to DR Congo in Sunday’s playoff final, keeping its hopes for the 2026 World Cup very much alive.
