The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, has thrown his weight behind President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies, stressing that the removal of fuel subsidy and other reforms had the backing of Nigerians across political and social lines.
Speaking on Sunrise Daily, Yilwatda said the reforms were unavoidable and necessary for the nation’s survival. According to him, most political parties, commentators, and candidates had, at one point, acknowledged that subsidy removal and tax restructuring were steps Nigeria could no longer avoid.
He explained that these policies are already bearing fruit, with government revenues rising significantly. “Only last month, the federal, state, and local governments shared two trillion naira at the Federation Account Allocation Committee. This is a sharp contrast to the past, when they shared barely about 500 billion,” Yilwatda noted.
The APC chairman further highlighted that states that once struggled to pay salaries are now more financially stable. “In 2023, about 24 states were borrowing, and many couldn’t meet salary obligations. Today, every state and local government has been able to pay salaries up to date,” he said.
Yilwatda maintained that Tinubu’s reforms are strengthening the federal government while also providing financial relief at state and local levels. He emphasized that the ripple effect of these changes is already ensuring better service delivery across the country.
