President Donald Trump is preparing to welcome New York’s mayor-elect, Zohran Mamdani, for a meeting at the Oval Office this Friday — a development that comes after weeks of heated campaign-trail attacks aimed at the 34-year-old progressive politician.
Trump, who has repeatedly labeled Mamdani a “communist” while pushing long-debunked claims about him, announced the meeting on his Truth Social page. His post noted that the discussion is scheduled for November 21.
Mamdani’s spokesperson, Dora Pekec, confirmed the visit, explaining that the mayor-elect intends to speak with the president about public safety, economic challenges, and the affordability concerns that shaped his landslide victory. According to her, more than one million New Yorkers rallied behind Mamdani’s promises just two weeks ago.
The meeting brings face-to-face two men who grew up in Queens but charted sharply different political and ideological paths. Trump often highlights surging Wall Street numbers when discussing the economy, while Mamdani points to an affordability crisis squeezing millions of residents across New York City.
Mamdani made history in the election, becoming the first mayoral candidate since 1969 to secure over a million votes. His platform leaned heavily on accessible housing, childcare support, fare-free buses, and city-run grocery stores proposals that some policy analysts say may be difficult to execute at the scale he envisions.
Trump’s criticism of Mamdani has extended beyond policy. He has openly mocked the mayor-elect’s name and threatened to withdraw federal funds from New York following his election, a stance widely interpreted as a swipe at Mamdani’s South Asian and Muslim background. At a recent campaign event, Trump dismissed him as “Mandami, whatever the hell his name is.”
Mamdani, however, has not shied away from responding. During his victory celebration, he directed a message straight at the president, telling supporters, “Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you — turn the volume up!”
Not long after, the White House press secretary confirmed that the president had indeed seen the moment.
The upcoming meeting now sets the stage for an unlikely sit-down between two political figures whose relationship has largely played out through sharp words and clashing visions for America’s largest city.
