Turkiye and Nigeria have officially started implementing the nine agreements signed during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s visit to Turkiye last month, signaling a new chapter in bilateral relations.
As part of the follow-up, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, met with the Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency Mehmet Poroy, on Wednesday, 4th February 2026. The meeting, confirmed in a statement by the Ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, was aimed at building on the momentum generated during President Tinubu’s historic Ankara visit.
Ambassador Poroy expressed gratitude for the coordination from the Nigerian side that made the state visit a success. He highlighted that the visit strengthened the partnership between the two nations and expressed optimism about the implementation of the decisions reached by the leaders of both countries.
Responding, Minister Tuggar described the visit as historic, noting that it has opened a fresh chapter in Turkiye-Nigeria relations. He also praised the signing of nine landmark agreements, emphasizing their significance for the governments and peoples of both nations.
During the discussions, both sides explored opportunities for collaboration in training and capacity building, particularly through the Nigerian Foreign Service Academy in Ijanikin, Lagos, and the Turkish Diplomatic Institute. They also agreed on clear channels of communication and follow-up mechanisms, including plans for a Political Consultative Meeting later in the year to ensure the agreements translate into tangible results.
With these steps underway, Turkiye and Nigeria are set to deepen strategic ties, creating new avenues for cooperation across diplomacy, trade, and shared development goals.
