The United States Embassy in Abuja has announced the cancellation of all visa appointments scheduled for March 4, 2026, citing security concerns linked to possible public demonstrations in the Nigerian capital. The decision comes as global tensions continue to rise following the intensifying conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran. Authorities say the precautionary measure is aimed at ensuring the safety of applicants and embassy staff while the situation remains uncertain.
In a public notice shared through its official communication channels, the embassy warned of a high possibility of protests within the Federal Capital Territory. American citizens living in Abuja were also advised to stay indoors for safety reasons. The statement noted that previous protests connected to international conflicts had sometimes resulted in clashes between demonstrators and security forces, prompting the need for caution. According to updates referenced by Zoyols, the embassy strongly encouraged U.S. citizens in the city to remain in their residences on the specified date until the security situation improves.
The travel and visa suspension follows reports of escalating violence in the Middle East. Iranian state and local media have reported the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, following airstrikes allegedly carried out by the United States and Israel. Several other senior Iranian officials were also reportedly killed in the strikes, an incident that has significantly increased diplomatic and military tensions across the region.
Following the reported deaths, Iran launched retaliatory attacks targeting strategic locations. The exchange of military actions between the involved nations has raised concerns among global observers, with many governments closely monitoring developments. The growing unrest has also influenced security advisories issued by foreign missions operating in different parts of the world, including Nigeria, where diplomatic offices are taking precautionary steps to protect their citizens and operations.
Officials have continued to urge residents and travellers to stay updated through official channels while avoiding large gatherings until tensions ease. The embassy said it will provide further updates regarding future visa appointment schedules once the security environment becomes more stable. For now, affected applicants are expected to reschedule their appointments once normal operations resume.
