American congressman Riley Moore has fired back at China after Beijing warned the United States against intervening in Nigeria’s internal affairs over alleged persecution of Christians. Moore made it clear that no foreign power, especially China, would dictate America’s foreign policy or moral stance.
In a post shared on his X handle, Moore voiced strong support for former President Donald Trump’s call to defend Christian communities in Nigeria. He described the attacks on Christians as horrific and said the US has a moral duty to protect religious freedom worldwide.
“President Trump is absolutely right to defend our brothers and sisters in Christ who are facing persecution and even martyrdom for their faith in Jesus Christ,” Moore stated.
He went further to slam China’s human rights record, accusing the Chinese government of hypocrisy for trying to lecture Washington on global ethics. “China will not dictate our foreign policy, and we won’t take moral lessons from a communist regime that arrests Christian pastors and detains minorities in camps,” he added.
Moore’s comments came after Beijing cautioned Washington against what it described as “unwarranted interference” in Nigeria’s affairs following Trump’s threat to deploy US forces to protect Christian communities under attack.
China reaffirmed its support for Nigeria’s government, stressing that every nation has the right to pursue its own path to development without foreign meddling.
Speaking at a press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said, “China firmly supports the Nigerian government in choosing a development path that fits its national reality. We oppose interference in other nations’ internal affairs under the guise of religion or human rights.”
Meanwhile, the Federal Government has urged the US to respect Nigeria’s sovereignty and warned against any unilateral military intervention.
The escalating diplomatic row has drawn global attention as both superpowers — Washington and Beijing — lock horns over influence in Africa, with Nigeria caught at the center of a heated moral and geopolitical debate.
